Quesadilla with Cheese

The title of this post is redundant -- like "chili con carne with meat" -- but it is in fact how a U.S. visitor to Mexico City would need to get a quesadilla that would meet the key expectation of queso-ness.

Reporting for PRI's The World, journalist Maya Kroth recently explored the culinary and linguistic story of the cheeseless quesadilla.

Just yesterday,  I learned about a special service of the BBC, known as BBC Great Lakes. It was established in 1994  by BBC journalists seeking to help reunite families in the aftermath of the genocide in Rwanda. It continues to broadcast in the Kinyarwanda and Kirundi languages. Its online presence includes the newsy  BBC Gahuza page,  as well as social media channels. Perhaps not surprisingly, it was from PRI's The World that I learned about this news service, in a piece entitled Memories of growing up in Bujumbura , in which producer Robert Misigaro reflects on the importance of a youth center in his home city, the capital of Burundi and shares music from that city. Aw, Professor

1,000th POST I began this blog -- which I sometimes call my "main blog" -- in 2008. At the time, I had just started using the center of my faculty home page to highlight examples of environmental geography as I see it. Those examples are still there, but the new platform of blogging seemed a more effective way to add many kinds of examples, and emerging social media platforms made it easy to share those examples with a wide readership. I recently realized that I was approaching my 1,000th published post (quite a few more remain as yet-to-be-published drafts), and I decided to celebrate with something fun. Coincidentally, I recently started making my own "Aw, Professor" memes, which friends and followers on Facebook really seem to appreciate. These are tongue-in-cheek words of unsolicited advice that echo themes found on the Not-the-13th Grade section of my faculty site. I share this spoken-word performance for no reason other than its title, which refers to a location on the Sabbaday Brook near the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire. Once source suggests that this is where the songwriter nearly drowned as a child, but that source also indicates it is in Vermont, so I need to do a little more research. This YouTube version blurs the original album cover for the non-naturist viewer. I know of only one other song named for coordinates.  N 42° 6' 3.001" W 71° 55' 3.295" is from the same album --  Goodness  -- by the band known as The Hotelier.
